Thumb Spica Do I need a thumb spica cast?
I am a yoga and Pilates instructor. I have recently moved and carried heavy boxes, so wasn't kind to my body. I also fell forward on the beach on the soft sand a couple weeks ago. I am not sure what exactly led to my condition, but my thumb, the metacarpophalangeal joint hurts when I grab things like a cup, or push (toothpaste). It is not swollen, but as I use my hand and finger (kitchen work, cooking, etc.) it doesn't seem to get better. If anything a little worse, more sensitive. Did I injure the ulnar collateral ligament of my thumb and do I need a thumb spica cast for a few weeks? I currently don't have an insurance, so I don't want to go to the doctor if... I hope that there is somebody out there who can answer. Thanks in advance!
I used to play volleyball and so I'm familiar with the kind of injury that you are reporting. You have two options. Rather than a cast, you can buy a thumb spica splint at most pharmacies or sporting goods stores. Link is just for illustrative purposes and I am not recommending that you purchase from this site. http://www.egeneralmedical.com/mck-87103000.html Or, you can tape your thumb during activities. http://www.nismat.org/traincor/spica.html
