I'm a full blown juvenile diabetic since 1969, and gave birth in 1987. My son is perfectly healthy now, although I wasn't told of what happens during labor to the baby. If your blood sugar gets and stays high, the baby's body tries to make insulin for the both of you, then when it's born, it's still making insulin, and the baby bottoms out, meaning his blood sugar goes down to almost nothing. Luckily, they are very well trained to catch this, and even back then, they did, and he suffered no ill effects. During my labor, a nurse had ripped out the IV that delivered insulin, and my blood sugar was over 800 and my blood pressure was 220 over 180. That was very extreme, and won't happen to you with gestational diabetes. Follow a sensible diet, without eating fats and too much at one time. Eating several small meals a day will be much better. You can buy a glucometer at the Walmart pharmacy for as little at 8.88 and the strips are around $30.00. This might give you an idea of what makes blood sugar go up and spike on you. For instance, mine does when I eat Bar-B-Que. Different things affect different people. Just keep things in moderation, but do not starve yourself or the baby. Your doctor will probably have you come in a little more often, and might induce labor after 38 weeks, once the baby is safe. Diabetic mothers who don't take care of themselves properly often have bigger babies, but you should be alright. Also, during the rest of your life, you might have a tendency to develope type 2 diabetes, so watch your weight, and exercise to stay healthy to take care of that beautiful baby you're about to have!!! Enjoy pregnancy. Everything will be alright.
