Aneroid Sphygmomanometer aneroid sphygmomanometer?
what is the difference between aneroid and mercury sphygmomanometer? their advantages and disadvantages
Aneroid means "without fluid". It uses a metallic pressure sensing element which flexes elastically. Because it has mechanical parts, it tends to get knocked out of calibration easily (as when the gauge is dropped). Also, calibrating it is more complex - you calibrate it at zero, then at rising pressures at determined intervals - frequently vs a mercury manometer.
Mercury manometer compares the pressure in the cuff with the weight of a rising column of mercury. Because weight of mercury is almost entirely constant, it practically never goes out of calibration. Also, it only needs calibration, if ever, at the zero point.
Many still consider mercury manometers as the gold standard when measuring blood pressure. However, these are bulkier, and meticulous to use (the column of mercury should be perfectly perpendicular to the ground to be accurate). Additionally, there is risk of mercury spills and exposure to toxic mercury fumes. Thus the solution to avoid these problems would be a protocol for using a good brand of aneroid which are periodically calibrated with mercury manometers.
