Why did they award the World Cup to South Africa in 2010 with its very high AIDS rate?
Won't it affect those who wish to travel to the country?
I would like to add that the Germans opened up brothels for this World Cup, so obviously prostitution is a money-maker during this event. (Yes, I know Germany has legalized prostitution, but doesn't the spread of HIV concern the FIFA committees?)
To trinirhia: That's not true. FIFA always consider political situations, economic security of the country, safety, etc. when making selection decisions.
Errm, before we talk about the AIDS situation or even crime situation in South Africa, we have to put things in perspective.
1. The award wasn't given this year, but 7 years before the event, in 2003.
2. South Africa were supposed to win in 1999, but I believe a NZ delegate abstained at the last and Germany won.
3. Sepp Blatter then announced the Cup would be hosted by each different Confederation on rotation, and after Europe in 2006, Africa would get the nod.
So, South Africa had a lot of emotional pull to get this Cup, in 1999, when they felt they should get it, I believe they were eliminated in the penultimate stage and promised by alot of delegates that they would have support in the next vote.
So AIDS and crimes, were never going to sway the voting crowd when the vote came up in 2003, it was always going to be South Africa from Africa, as the richest nation with only Egypt or maybe Morocco having a chance.
And that's why South Africa got it, but sticking to your theory, I think the World Cup is going to be a boost rather than a bane for Africa.
The sheer magnitude of the tournament will make highlight the problems of AIDS, crime and others in South Africa. The government will act and FIFA will play it's part in helping this out, in the media relations side.
