Spine Neck What do you do when someone has injured their spine/neck?
In, like, an emergency situation where someone has snapped their neck or something. Do you just call 911 (999 in hong kong) and tell the person to stay calm, or can someone just tell me exactly what a red cross-trained first aider would do? Thanks a lot guys.
Very good question. First and mostly importantly, call 9-1-1 (999) and make sure emergency medical is coming.
Second, it is important not to move the person. If there is a spinal injury, moving the person could cause the now exposed spine to be severed. The only exception to this rule is in case of impending danger. Like the person is in a fire or hazardous area. Then you'd want to move them out of that area. In doing so attempt to keep their spine as straight as possible while moving them.
Third, you could hold "C-spine". This is done by simply placing your hands on the side of the person's head to keep them from moving their neck, and wait for EMS to arrive. Do not apply pressure, but just hold your hands firm enough so the head doesn't move. Make sure to tell the person why you are holding their head so they don't freak out. Ask them to help you by not moving their head in any direction.
EMS professionals will take C-spine precautions for any suspected spine injury. This is done with a neck collar and backboard.
